Aretha Franklin, you got it goin' on!

Jan 20, 2009

I have to say, as much as I disliked Michelle Obama's ensemble, I was completely blown away by the style of another African American fashionista: Aretha Franklin. I mean, did you see her hat with the gigantic bow?

It kind of reminded me of past birthday and Hanukkah parties. My sisters and I would make hats out of the remains of present wrapping: ribbons, bows, tissue paper, etc. Our hats were always extravagant and exaggerated, over-the-top and amazing...kind of like Aretha's.

I was just trying to describe the diva-licious hat to Jenni, who only managed to catch Obama's speech, which is pretty good considering she's not even American. I scoured the Internet (ok fine, I typed "Aretha Franklin Inauguration" into Google) and got nothing. I was devestated...until I looked on CollegeCandy, which had a link from the LA Times with a photo!

Oh, and considering my birthday is tomorrow, I'm expecting millions of tissue paper wrapped presents, so perhaps Megan and I will perform the old hat making traddition and replicate Ms. Franklin's bow-dacious beauty.

My Canadian New Year

Jan 1, 2009

So Jenni, Syd and I are curled up in Syd's bed right now recovering from a CRAZY New Year's eve. Here are some highlights:

1) Making non-Jews toast a "l'chaim"

2) Getting down to BSB with Syd's girl friends.

3) Meeting a cute American boy. We discussed Obama, the demise of the Canadian government and the American flag. Oh yeah, he told me I could become his press secretary when he becomes president, and Jenni can become his Israeli ambassador.

4) Getting a new nickname: Bubbie. Apparently, I'm going to be a cute old lady who will NOT become a crazy cat lady. If a cute boy says it's true, then it must be!

5) Being told Jenni and I have beautiful blue eyes...and that we are gorgeous.

6) Meeting a Ben Stiller look-a-like, Syd's best friend, Adam. No joke, he could be his twin. Identical.

7) Missing the New Year's countdown and making our own two minutes later.

8) Being sad about not getting a New Year's kiss and kissing Jenni on the cheek. Who needs boys when you have your best girl friends?

9) Arguing with a frat boy who chose his frat brother over his girl best friend. This I will never understand.

10) What happens in Canada stays in Canada.

11) Trekking down the street  in the snow in search of a cab...it was dark, cold and we were wearing inappropriate footwear.

12) Being rescued by a super nice cab driver and a drunk French Canadian couple.

13) Getting back to Syd's in one piece, curling up in a ball and falling asleep. I slept while they ate ramen.

...and so concludes my Canadian adventure. I'll be back in Baltimore in less than 11 hours. My plans for this week definitely including seeing an actual American doctor, getting a pedicure and finding Sophie's prom dress.

I think it was a good week, eh?

A stylish (future) first lady

Dec 8, 2008

I came across this Poll: Which Gown should Michelle Obama Rock to the Inauguration Ball on the Frisky, which linked back to this article from Women's Wear Daily. Apparently, the magazine asked designers to contribute their sketches for Michelle's inauguration gown.

Like most people, I've always admired Jackie-O's style, and now, I'm looking forward to another fashionable first lady.

since another icon of Democratic chic took up residency on Pennsylvania Avenue in 1961."

2 hours in the life of a telemarketer

Nov 1, 2008

On Thursday, I participated in a (required) political phone survey for one of my classes. To clarify, I was the one doing the calling, not answering the questions.

I was given a list of random Boston phone numbers and was instructed to call as many as possible within the 2-hour period. Needless to say, most of the people I called didn't pick up their phones- most likely because the survey took place between 6:30-8:30...the time when most people sit down to dinner and refuse to answer the phone due to pesky telemarketers like myself.

Finally, a political survey with a little humor- voting based on mancave preferences...

Oct 23, 2008

I found a great link on Free the Shopper. You should totally check it out. It's just a way to laugh a little about what otherwise is a serious matter: the upcoming election.

Come on, a little giggle never hurt anyone!

If you were voting for president based on each candidate's man cave, who would you vote for?

More Political Videos...What's happening to me?

Oct 4, 2008

So it seems that a bunch of my friends are extremely talented and creative...and are big Obama supporters.

The video below is short and sweet, humorous and creative. It also happens to be from a really cool kid who shares a birthday with yours truly:

This next video is a bit on the long side, but it's really catchy. Plus, there's a a cowboy. I know the guy in the yellow...he happened to be my middle school student council's VP!

VP Debates

Oct 2, 2008

I'm watching the vice presidential debate right now and I have no idea what's going on. All I know is that the "bangs cluster" over S.P.'s left eye keeps bouncing up and down every time she blinks (it's really annoying), and J.B. can't stop smiling at S.P.'s  jabs against Obama and himself.  His teeth are really white! Also, J.B. talks a lot, and S.P. just said nucular... I guess that's just a republican thing.

Wow, I really suck at politics... in the words of the classic and highly acclaimed film High School Musical: "Stick to the stuff you know, G3B..."
